Travel tips A-Z.Norway is a northern European country covering an area ofsq. As observed on the physical map of Norway, the country is highly mountainous and has a heavily indented coastline.

Before the last ice age ended about 10, years ago, Norway was covered by a thick ice sheet. When that ice finally retreated or melted its movement across the land formed islands, lakes, rivers and mountains. In the far northeast above the Arctic Circle, frozen arctic tundra dominates the landscape, from Vardo, south and west. This tundra receives little precipitation and has a very short growing season, so it is generally a treeless plain of low shrubs and hearty grasses. A south-central plateau slopes into the Trondelag, a hilly and mountainous farming area with strips of fertile land on the edges of the Trondheim Fjord.

Additional lowlands are found in the southeast and along parts of the southern coastline. The lowest point is sea level at the coast. Norway is divided into 11 administrative regions or counties.

These counties are further subdivided into municipalities. Located in the northwest of Oslofjord and surrounded by forested hills is, Oslo — the capital, the largest and the most populous city of Norway.

It is the administrative, cultural, industrial and economic center of the country. Oslo is also an important maritime industries and trading center in Europe. Norway is a Northern European country located on the western half of the Scandinavian Peninsula.

About two-thirds of Norway is mountainous, and off its much-indented coastline lie, carved by deep glacial fjords, some 50, islands. Dependent on fishing and farming, early Norwegians developed a seafaring tradition that would reach its apex in the Viking era, when Norse warriors regularly raided the British Islesthe coasts of western Europe, and even the interior of Russia; the Vikings also established colonies in Iceland and Greenland and explored the coast of North America which Leif Eriksson called Vinland more than a thousand years ago.

This great tradition of exploration by such explorers as Leif Erikkson and his father, Erik the Redcontinued into modern times, exemplified by such men as Fridtjof NansenRoald Amundsenand Thor Heyerdahl.

The northern part of the country, particularly the rugged Finnmark Plateau, is home to the Sami also called Lapps or Laplandersa Uralic people whose origins are obscure.

Life expectancy rates in Norway are among the highest in the world. Such evident national consensus—along with abundant waterpoweroffshore oil, and peaceful labour relations—was a major factor in the rapid growth of Norway as an industrial nation during the 20th century and in the creation of one of the highest standards of living in the world, reinforced by a comprehensive social welfare system.

The extremely hard bedrock, which consists mostly of granite and other heat- and pressure-formed materials, ranges from one to two billion years in age. Glaciation and other forces wore down the surface and created thick sandstoneconglomerate, and limestone deposits known as sparagmite.

Numerous extensive areas called peneplainswhose relief has been largely eroded away, also were formed.

From the Cambrian through the Silurian geologic period i. Folding processes in the Earth then gave rise to a mountain system that is a continuation of the Caledonian orogenic belt. Norway has an average elevation of 1, feet metrescompared with 1, feet metres for Europe as a whole. Rivers running westward acquired tremendous erosive power. To the east the land sloped more gently, and broader valleys were formed.

Enormous masses of soil, gravel, and stone were also carried by glacial action as far south as present-day Denmark and northern Germany. The bedrock, exposed in about 40 percent of the area, was scoured and polished by the movements of these materials. There are four traditional regions of Norway, three in the south and one in the Arctic north. The three main regions of the south are defined by wide mountain barriers.

The narrow coastal zone of Vestlandet has many islands, and steep-walled, narrow fjords cut deep into the interior mountain region. Northern Norway, or Nord-Norgebegins almost exactly at the midpoint of the country. Most of the region is above the Arctic Circleand much of it is filled with mountains with jagged peaks and ridges, even on the many islands. Norway has about 65, lakes with surface areas of at least 4 acres 1.

In the melting periods between ice ages, large areas were flooded by the sea because the enormous weight of the ice had depressed the land. Thick layers of clay, silt, and sand were deposited along the present coast and in large areas in the Oslo and Trondheim regions, which rise as high as feet metres above sea level today.

Some very rich soils are found below these old marine coastal regions. In the large areas covered by forests, the main soil has been stripped of much of its mineral content, and this has created poor agricultural land. Norway Article Media Additional Info. Read the feature highlight summary below, and check out the Visual Studio 2017 version 15. The CPU Usage tool (available during F5 Debugging in the Diagnostic Tools window and in the ALT-F2 Performance Profiler) now displays source line highlighting based on the CPU consumption of specific lines of code.

This feature requires that source information be included in the generated PDB which is controlled by the project settings. Projects for which PDBs do not have source information will be unable to display either the line attribution or the source file. In addition to create, you can now delete tags, push tags, and create a new branch from tags. Visual Studio Team Services users can now check out pull request branches, which makes it easier to review pull requests, test changes, and build your code.

Last month we introduced the App Authentication Extension which makes it easy to configure your machine to use these protected settings so that you can develop and debug apps locally using your Visual Studio credentials. We do still expect a new iPhone SE model at some point in the future. When the new model launches it is likely to keep the existing, classic design, but feature upgraded internals such as the A10 chip found in the iPhone 7 and a more powerful camera.

To be honest we've got no idea what the follow up to the iPhone X is going to be called, but this guess is as good as any. We're not convinced this would be wise (the X already has the biggest screen Apple has ever put on a phone), but the market usually gets what the market wants.

We'd also love it if Touch ID could make a comeback in addition to Face ID. This would be possible if Apple can incorporate a fingerprint scanner under the glass, something which was too technologically challenging in 2017 but may be feasible now.

After the tremors of 2017, however, Apple may well consolidate in 2018, offering incremental upgrades and perhaps spreading existing features to more models - giving the 4.

However, this was not the iPad mini 5 anticipated, and given that the iPad mini 4 was last updated in September 2015, it's clear that Apple isn't too focused on its smaller tablets and Apple does state that the most popular tablet size is 9. Perhaps spring 2018 will see the introduction of an iPad Mini Pro with upgraded components, a new thinner, tougher aluminium chassis, and the inclusion of a Smart Connector to match that of the other iPad Pro devices. Read more: iPad mini 5 new feature rumours iOS 11 was released to the public on 19 September 2017.

Like iOS 12 - and Apple's other major OS updates - watchOS 5 will first be unveiled in the summer of 2018, before a public launch in autumn.

Unlike the others, however, watchOS 5 probably won't be made available in the form of a public beta. We suspect that this may be the first watchOS update that won't be able to run on every Apple Watch model, after seeing our first-gen Apple Watch struggle with the watchOS 4 update in 2017. Following its usual pattern, Apple will reveal and demo macOS 10.

The last and least heralded of Apple's OSes, tvOS is nevertheless a Pretty Big Deal for everyone with a fourth-gen or 4K Apple TV. But we've since been informed that it won't make its debut until 2018.

Designed in response to the likes of Google Home and Amazon Echo, HomePod is a smart speaker that also sounds brilliant. Apple focused more on sound quality than its smart features in the unveiling of the HomePod, which is an interesting take on things but perhaps we'll discover more about Siri's role in the new device as we approach its release date.

Discover more about the HomePod here. Brand new to the Mac line-up is the iMac Pro, which Apple unveiled at WWDC 2017. It isn't out yet, but Apple still maintains that it will be launched before the end of 2017. The stunning new device is the most powerful Mac ever made, and it's still a sleek all-in-one like the iMacs we know. This time, though, Apple has opted for the Space Grey colouring, complete with a new Space Grey keyboard, mouse and trackpad.

The specs on the iMac Pro are incredible, particularly if you opt for a built-to-order model. Those working with 3D and VR, for example. But more than that, this iMac offers a machine that is going to be powerful enough for whatever is next.

You can find out more about what to expect from the iMac Pro here. The Mac Pro is long overdue a refresh, as it hasn't been updated since the launch of the 'trashcan' Pro model in 2013.

The once-futuristic device now looks a little long in the tooth, having been bypassed by generations of Intel chips that never made it into the chassis. In April 2017 Apple broke its silence and discussed the Pro's future with a small group of journalists, first apologising for the lack of updates and then acknowledging that the trashcan design didn't work out the way it had hoped.
